As a part of their Christmas card the Michael Mazzeo Gallery in New York wrote: “This may not be your typical holiday totem, but we find it quite festive nonetheless. In typical Charlandesque fashion, Caleb brightens the night with a lamp powered by… apples!”

Caleb Charland is a photographer who explores the domestic space and investigates the mysterious qualities of everyday objects. This lamp lightens up by the LED’s connected to the apples in the orchard. A total of 30 LED’s are each powered by ten apples.

Rianne van Duijnhoven‘s series My Africa inspired me. Intense images of African life, other then the images I know. Light plays an important part in the work and creates a strong and emotional image language, which touches the soul. At least mine..

Rianne van Duijnhoven graduated cum laude at the Photo Academy Amsterdam and is a New Dutch Photography Talent, a new book and catalogue of 100 emerging Dutch photographers selected by GUP magazine.

I was really amazed when I heard artist William Verstraeten talking on TedX Amsterdam. An idea that seems so simple, but what a staggering result: the IGIRAMA, a massive photo atop the South Tower of the World Trade Centre constructed in a dome on top of a mirror. This forms a true sky walk as sitting on a cloud. When your are in New York you can visit the work at the September 11th Memorial Museum. Many artists are resident in our beautiful city Amsterdam. During RijksakademieOPEN 2011, over 50 resident artists from all over the World open teir studios. The diversity of their backgrounds and the broad range of artist’s positions offer a unique view on the latest developments in contemporary art. Untill 7 december 2011 the Foam_Amsterdam will show 4 visions on the future of the photography museum. Lauren Cornell, Jefferson Hack, Erik Kessels, Alison Nordström each show there vision on ‘what’s next’.

Taragalte concept was born out of a partnership between the local team with local foundations as well as national and international institutions, all wishing to make a contribution to genuine development of the Moroccon Sahara region.

On 11-11-2011 the third Taragalte festival will be held, in the south of Morocco, in the Sahara. The full moon will give the blessing for a prosperous and abundant festival and a fantastic lineup is presented. The date was chosen to match with the traditional Moussem – a festival held when the trade caravans entered the big Oasis of M’hamid (Taragalte) after traveling across the desert for months. Emphasis is placed on cultural exchanges between communities of the North African Sahara. The Taragalte festival not only focuses on music, but also on the cultural and environmental heritage.

After hard work the Taragalte concept now established itself in not only the yearly festival and a tourist accommodation, but also a conservation program and a line of design products co-created with Butterfly Works.

The Patient Gardener is an project that consists of 10 cherry trees that have been planted in an 8-meter diameter ring. Once they begin to mature, the architects at the Stockholm-based Visiondivision are going to prune, bend, pull and regulate the light of the trees to produce a comfortable and serene space. Intriguingly, the installment, which requires a degree of patient diligence, is intended for on-campus studying, which demands the same virtues. Although the computer-generated visuals are staggering to witness, students at the Politecnico di Milano will have to wait another 60 years before revising their lectures inside The Patient Gardener…

He captured tenement infernos, car crashes, and gangland executions. He found washed-up lounge singers and teenage murder suspects in paddy wagons and photographed them at their most vulnerable – or, as he put it, their most human. He caught couples kissing on their beach blankets on Coney Island and the late-night voyeurs on lifeguard stands watching them. And everywhere he went, he snatched images of people sleeping: drunks on park benches, whole families on Lower East Side fire escapes, men and women snoring in movie theatres. He was the supreme chronicler of the city at night. Weegee loved New York and New York eventually loved Weegee.

“I have no inhibitions and neither has my camera… ” Weelee stated. Arthur Fellig (Weelee) was born in Austria in 1899. Coming to the USA in 1909, he ended up in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Leaving school in 1914 to help support the family, he worked for a time as a street photographer. In 1923 he joined Acme News Services as a darkroom operator. In 1935, he left to work as a freelance photographer.

All museums stay open until 2am, and collections are spiced up with music, performances, drinks, meet and greets, installations and other art related activities. The Peter Fetterman Gallery in Santa Monica, California is going to exhibit the work of one of our favorite photographers Steve McCurry. The exhibition, Iconic Photographs display McCurry’s most prominent images throughout his career. Iconic Photographs highlights McCurry’s ability to be in the right place at the right time and show us the blurred, but interesting lines between journalism and artistry.

Pieter Hugo was born 1976 and grew up in Cape Town, South Africa. He is a South African photographer who primarily works in portraiture and whose work engages with both documentary and art traditions with a focus on African communities.

Pieter Hugo: “These photographs came about after a friend emailed me an image taken on a cellphone through a car window in Lagos, Nigeria, which depicted a group of men walking down the street with a hyena in chains. A few days later I saw the image reproduced in a South African newspaper with the caption ‘The Streets of Lagos’. Nigerian newspapers reported that these men were bank robbers, bodyguards, drug dealers, debt collectors. Myths surrounded them. The image captivated me.
Through a journalist friend I eventually tracked down a Nigerian reporter, Adetokunbo Abiola, who said that he knew the ‘Gadawan Kura’ as they are known in Hausa (a rough translation: ‘hyena handlers/guides’).
A few weeks later I was on a plane to Lagos. Abiola met me at the airport and together we took a bus to Benin City where the ‘hyena men’ had agreed to meet us. However, when we got there they had already departed for Abuja.”

New York artist Tom Fruin’s outdoor sculpture Kolonihavehus in the plaza of the Royal Danish Library in Copenhagen has the appearance of a friendly and colorful stained-glass house, yet it also evokes thoughts of churches and Charles Rennie Macintosh. Fruin’s sculpture is constructed of a thousand reclaimed pieces of plexiglass ranging in size from 2×2 to 24×36 inches. They originate from many sources, including a closed- down plexi distributorship near Copenhagen, a framing shop, the basement of the Danish State Art Workshops, and the dumpsters outside the Danish Architecture Center. The sculpture was brought to life by daily performances by Copenhagen-based CoreAct headed by Anika Barkan and Helene Kvint.

What To Say About The Other are the results of Janneke and Hillie de Rooij. In this publication they define image as a visual prejudice. The images spread by the media can be experienced as the absolute truth. This publication tries to find out what these images are, that we have of the other. By showing the results they want to illustrate that these images are not the absolute truth. Nowadays images are manipulated to create fear, whereas they should be used as a starting point for interest and dialogue.

They show visual images, found on the internet. (Janneke and Hillie searched for ‘Africa’ on the Netherland’s most popular websites, and for ‘Europe’ on Botswana’s most popular websites.) In addition, they collected the images formed by the perceptions of people in the streets of Amsterdam and Maun. The second part of their publication show memories of their own family in Botswana.

In this fifth annual Talent issue of Foam Magazine, we highlight work from fifteen young talents in a diverse range of photographic work. The shortlist was selected from over 800 portfolio submissions to this year’s Talent Call by Foam Magazine. And for this first time in five years there is an extensive exhibition in Amsterdam presenting this exceptional and yet undiscovered work.

The fifteen portfolios in Foam Magazine Issue #28 / Talent span across analogue, black and white, self-development, digital alteration and experimentation that question and confirm the limitations of the photographic medium all at once. They point to developments, trends and themes that are of particular importance to a new generation of artists and, importantly, our annual talent call allows our readers and editors to gain an accurate impression of the activities of young photographers worldwide.
